Ebina Station (海老名駅 Ebina-eki?) is a train station in the city of Ebina, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan. Ebina is a joint station, served by the Sagami Line of the East Japan Railway Company, the Odakyu Odawara Line and the Sotetsu Main Line. Fifty minutes from Shinjuku on the Odakyu line, and thirty minutes from Yokohama on the Sotetsu line, it was surrounded by rice fields until the 1970s. Because it is conveniently accessed from the Yokohama and Tokyo business centers, the city has seen rapid growth in recent years, when housing complexes and shopping malls started to spring up. The station is 43.5 rail kilometers from the Odawara Line’s terminal at Shinjuku Station, 15.9 rail kilometers from the Sagami Line’s terminus at Chigasaki Station and 24.6 rail kilometers from the Sotetsu Line’s terminus at Hashimoto Station.

Station history

Ebina Station was opened on November 25, 1941 as the terminal station of the Jinchū Railroad (神中鉄道?), now Sagami Railway). The Odakyu Line Ebina-Kokubun Station (海老名国分駅?), which had been in operation since 1927, was shifted 400 meters on April 1, 1943, for joint operation of Ebina Station. From December 1971, Ebina became one of the chief rail yards of the Odakyu line. On December 21, 1973, a new station was opened, located approximately 400 meters from the old station in the direction of Odawara. From March 21, 1987, the Sagami Line began operations to Ebina, less than a month before the dissolution and privatization of the Japan National Railways and formation of the East Japan Railway Company.
